Any Beauticians, Hair stylists and African-American females out there?

What treatment would you recommend for severely damaged hair? My beautician told me today that my 14 year old daughter's hair is going through severe breakage; what can we do to treat it at home without having to go to the salon every week for the next couple of months? We are desparate since she does not want to cut her hair.

Mayo!! Don't laugh, I"m serious. It's a great conditioner. Just put it on after shampooing, let it stay on the hair for 30-45 minutes w/ a plastic bag covering it, apply light heat w/ a blow dryer.. Than shampoo and condition as normal.

Even tho your daughter does not want to cut her hair, split ends are going to happen, breakage is going to happen, it's best to get a TRIM at least every 6-8 weeks. Getting a trim helps the hair grow rather than prohibiting it.

Good luck!!

deep conditioners, Vo5 Hot oil treatment is great too.

u might want to try Henna- my mom uses it and it does her hair wonders. she mixes it with egg, avacado, and any other natural ingredients said to be good for the hair. You can buy Henna for hair in any Indian or Pakastani shop. It also naturally colors the hair too! If you leave it on for 24 hours and wash it out its really good. but if you don't want to try that...

i think its all about keeping the hair clean, moisturized and not putting too much stress or pressure on it. avoid chemicals, like relaxers/perms. keep it natural for best results, if she wants her hair straight use a chi or ceramic iron, but just leaving the hair alone is whats best.

if my hair were damaged i would just cut the damages ends and regrow the hair b/c damaged hair just looks unhealthy.

Breakage can be caused by many different reasons, from poor diet, vitamin deficiancy, and certain hair styles even, among many other things. So there are many things that can be done, at home, depending on what the reasoning behind the breakage.

Make sure that she is eating a well balanced diet with a large variety of fruits %26amp; vegetables, lean protiens, and whole grains. Have her take multi-vitamins on a daily basis, because no matter how well a person eats, the nutrients in foods aren't nearly what they used to be "back in the day".

Get a good nourishing shampoo %26amp; conditioner, something for dry damaged hair. While salon exclusive brands are very good, it's not always necessary to spend that kind of money, there are many very good products availiable in the stores at reasonable prices. And at least once a week, use a deep conditioning treatment, or hot oil treatment. Very dry hair is more suseptible to breakage.

Have her avoid wearing her hair tied up, especially in the same place, as often as possible. Avoid constant wearing of extensions, no matter how applied because these add extra stress to the hair and scalp.

She may not want to cut her hair, but until her hair is back to a healthy status, she should go in about every 3 weeks for a small trim. Once it is back to healthy, she should go in at least every 6-8 weeks for a good trim and continue avoiding styles that can cause excessive damage.

In my shop we sell alot of redkin deep fuel, its a little blue box with 6 tubes in it. You use 1 tube a week . You will be amazed after the first one, also trim not cut, at least every 6 weeks. The faster you get that bad hair off the better. Also maybe try Biolodge Hydrating shampoo and Conditioning Balm daily or every other day its good in between treatments. The redkin costs approx. 30.00 it works and still cheaper than a weekly trip to the salon.

try a protein hair treatment that is good for breakage. also have you daughter eat foods that have vitamin d, protein (etc) that are good for hair breakage. also do not blow dry her hair often b/c that leads to breakage. put rollers instead and dry it under a hair dryer. also limit using curling/straightening irons cause this too damage hair. if your daughter has a perm, then maybe the type of perm may cause this (esp. if it has lye in it). also get rid of split ends about every 2-3 months is helpful. make sure beautician knows how to cut well and not cut off too much.

Keep the hair deep conditioned. I love Queen Helen's product and it is not expensive at all. Also make sure she wraps her hair every night and puts a silk scarf over it. She also wants to keep some type of oil on her hair as well. Also look for an hairstyle that does not require her to put any bands in her hair.

When I damaged my hair I kept it the wrap hair style and it snapped back into shape after a while. You must know there is no saving the really damaged hair and even she does not cut it it will break off.
