How much should you tip a hair stylist for a cut and highlight?

I don't have very much hair, very fine, thin and short. It only takes about 45-mins to 1 hour to completely finish. Last time she charged $54.00 for everything including the shampooing.

at $54.00 I would tip 15-20%, for a total of about $9.00

15 percent

approximately 10% of your bill but ultimately the choice is up to you and how you feel about the result. if the result is decent or supurb you could give a tip that matches and the same goes if the result was bad...

The choice is really up to you depending on how well YOU feel like they did your hair. I had one lady who did awful but I still tipped like 5 dollars. I LOVE the lady I have now and she does GREAT so I tip her about 10 dollars. Somewhere around 10% I would say if he/she does a good job. Hope this helps!

personally, i didnt think that hair stylists got tips. ( :o) getting a hair cut is already overly expensive. $15~ for a simple trim? my mom can do that. for free

so, especially with womens hair, it is already expensive enough and a tip isnt needed.

Granted, as with most tip receiving jobs it is based on service. With going to a salon though it is tricky...you should tip at least 20% regardless because of the time alone that was spent doing your hair. Most salons charge the stylist booth rent and they have to buy their own products which they use on clients. It can be expensive at times especially if they are having a slow day or shitty tippers. On a $54.00 job such as you described I think that $20.00 would be good.
