How do I get a hair stylist to listen to me?

Everytime I get my hair cut, I think I'm being very specific but the stylists always gets it wrong. Usually, they cut my layers too short and I look like I have a helmet on. It seems like they never take the shape of my face into consideration. Isn't this something they teach you in cosmetology school?

I need to get my hair cut again but I really don't want the top or front layers cut since I finally got them to grow to a good length. On the other hand, I don't mind the layers in the back being cut. How can I express this more clearly!!? Should I go to the same person who cut it and messed it up last time or try someone totally new and risk it being worse?

How can I tell them what I want in a nice way? How can I stop them nicely when I see them doing what I asked them not to do?

as a hair stylist, i can tell you how difficult it can be to understand what it is the client has visioned for his/her hair. someone might say choppy layers and have a different idea of what that word means then what the stylist thinks it means.

90% of us stylist want to do exactly what you want with your hair. i wish there was a way to tell when someone belongs to the other 10%, but unfortunately there isn't.

the best place to start is ask around. ask your friends/coworkers/family who their stylist is and what they think of them. are they getting what they ask for?

and when you get in the chair, be forceful with getting your point across. don't let your stylist intimidate you. tell them/show them exactly what you want. mainly, don't be afraid to speak up. you won't get in trouble. personally, my favorite clients are the ones who tell me exactly what they want and keep me in check. i've never had my feelings hurt when someone tells me how it's going to be.

also, you should research and know everything you can. that way you can't let your stylist get anything past you. you can say things like, "why are you razoring my hair when you know it's going to make it frizzy?"

good luck with the search for a good stylist. we are out there, i promise.

instead of verbally telling the stylist ,show her what you want . a good salon should have a style book or pictures , that way you can say if the finished result it does not look like what you want , you have visual back up, if that doesnt work i would look at going to another sylist.

Hi Chandie

For whatever reason, there appears to be a communication breakdown between you and your hairdresser. While they may be the nicest person on the planet, if they are unwilling or unable to follow your directive then you need to reconsider going to them.

The bottom line is that whatever they come up with, you will have to wear for quite some months.

See if you can find several photos of what you want. If it you see it on a celebrity, get several photos of that style on them so you can show it from various angels.

When finding a good hairdresser, word of mouth is worth a ton of promotion. Talk to your friends and colleagues and ask them who they recommend. Take careful note of their own hairstyles and the cut to see what kind of a job has been done. When you see one that looks good, hey go for it.

By the way, expensive does not necessarily mean the best. My favourite hairdresser charges a fraction of what my old one did and the work is much better. Some people have a flair for this and others have training. There is a difference I'm sure you can appreciate.

If you wish to give this person another go, then by all means do so. Just go in armed with pictures and make sure you convey what you DON'T want as clearly as you convey what you do.

Good luck. ~ Peps

Sometimes its worth paying a bit more for a better hair salon if they're gonna get it right.

So i suggest going to a new place, maybe bring a picture of your ideal hair.

I got a pic of reese witherspoons hair and brought it to them and they got it right.

Dont be shy to speak up.

You're the one paying them.

*sigh* I had the same problem as, even when I brought a picture of the hairstlye I wanted, I got something a little different. I went to the salon *cough* Fatastic Sams for a few months and the 3 times I cut my hair there I wasn't happy with the results so I changed haidressers.

I always joked with my mom that gay guys cut hair really good, but it is true. There's one salon ,my cousin goes to here in Hawaii that has 3 or 4 hairstylist who are gay or transgendered that are really popular with the customers. I went there once while visiting family in Hawaii and I happened to have one of the two transgendered "women". The service was way better I even paid the same price or a at least $2 more than I did than when I used to go to Fantastic Sams.

Do not be so stingy and go to the most expensive salons. My experience is even if they do not follow my wishes the outcome will still make me look good and feel good.
