What is the industry standard for tipping a hair stylist?

I work in a restaurant, and the industry standard for tipping is 20% of the bill. Is it the same for a hair stylist? I'm going to get full highlights and a cut. For this, the prices start at $140. I am thinking it might cost around $165 because my hair is kind of long. I would like to know how much you tip for standard service and for excellent service.

What is the industry standard for tipping a hair stylist?

There really isn't a going standard, but as a stylist 15-20 is a nice tip. The manager or owner should also be tipped if they are the ones doing your hair. It is ok to then tip less as they do make more although you must remember there is overhead in any business that comes out of his/her pocket as well. Best rule of thumb is if the service is great tip more, not so great tip less, if you have a really bad experience you can even refuse to pay the bill until your hair is fixed free of charge of course. Most stylists get paid hourly and the more time they put into your hair the more you should pay as they are missing the opportunity to service other clients and make tips there. Salons are state regulated and some states do not allow stylists to 'rent' space in a salon and therefore do not have the same overhead of having to buy the products they use on you but like I said before the time, and the quality are reasons to tip regardless of who does the work. Do what you can afford, but tip something regardless.

I generally stick with 20% most stylist work pn salary or a percentage of the fee you pay they often have to rent their chair and really rely on tips. If it is the owner of the salon a tip is not necessary if offered some turn them down

well normally i tip them about ten percent of what i paid but sometimes a good five to ten will do.

Wrong. There is no standard. I tip 15% IF the service and food is worth it. For a haircut that much, I'd toss a ten-spot and let it go at that.
