How do I describe a "scene" haircut to my hair stylist?

I don't have a ton of money to spend of a super professional hair stylist [I'm going to great clips...] and I was wondering what terms I should use to describe the haircut that I want to whoever cuts my hair. I have already attempted to cut my hair myself, but it didn't come out as I wanted it to.

"I want it to be medium length [a little past my shoulders] and choppy with lots of layers. I would like the top layers to be pretty short, but the longer layers to be able to still be put straight almost as if they were extensions. I want to be able to do the puffy-top hair as well."

Is that a good enough description or am I missing some key words? I would also bring in these two pictures:

I don't want this haircut to end up looking like a mullet!

Any advice would be appreciated.

Actually this is a form of the hair cut "mullet"

Just bring in these pictures and say thats what you want.

Or say you want lots of choppy razor cut layers :D

The photos should be enough for any decent stylist to cut it.

If you end up with a mullet, get them to do a buzz and start over. ;-D

Or just tell them you want to look like you're in an 80s hair metal band.

I would print the picture and take it to your hairdresser. You can print all the images on one piece of 8x10 paper. No photo printer -just use regular paper. No printer-send it to a friend who has one or walgreens. See if your cutter has an email you can send too. Perhaps you can go early to the shop and search books to show her. Its a cute cut.

Make sure the stylist understands that you want a lot of long points.

I worry that the second example you have will be too "mullet-y" looking if your hair texture and head shape aren't cooperative with that look. I think your description and the pics are very good!

i would bring in the photots with you which should be enough for your stylist to work with.or tell her you want the layers slightly longer tan whats in the picture.Though most kids with scene hair have a mullet style cut.
