I have a question about tipping mostly geared toward hair stylist. I know the tipping procedure for waiters and waitresses. I also know that they pay taxes on their food sales whether they receive a tip or not.
What is the procedure for hair stylists? Is a tip based on the job or on the time involved or on a percentage basis like with food service?
If I were to get a cut and color, lasting about 2 hours (most of it under the dryer), for $100 -- what would be a fair tip?
If I were to get an eyebrow waxing, lasting about 5-10 minutes, for $15 -- what would be a fair tip?
Do hair stylists pay taxes on their tips like food servers do?

In the bigger salons, they do pay taxes on tips, although, as with food servers, it is possible to avoid paying taxes on cash tips and they may actually pay taxes only on credit card tips.
The tip should be based on both the quality of the job and the time spent doing it--if it is an excellent job that took a long time, you should tip higher than for an excellent job that took a short time.
I would recommend tipping 15-20%--20% for a really great job--it ensures you will be getting an appointment in a timely manner when you want to come back and it is the decent thing to do. So for the $100 job, I'd tip $20 if you really liked it. For the eyebrows, a $3 tip would be fine.

Honestly, whatever you think they deserve.
I normally don't tip a hair stylist. But I do tip my mom's friend when i go where she works and she cuts my hair. She does an amazing job on my hair...and other places just mess it up. They cut it uneven and don't really care.

Its like tipping at a buffet. You can if you wish to. It shouldn't be expected of you. I factor in the quality of the job done, did she do it the way I want it rather than what she thought would work, did she have good clean conversation, (I had a styllist once that degraded men and used foul language, I never went back to her.) Did she ask me if the final results were what I wanted and if not, did she fix it?
With all that said, I tip 3-5 bucks for a $15.00 cut and style when all is well. I actually sit and watch what others are tipping when I try a new place, let's me get a feel for the stylists.

For colouring, IF you like it and feel they did a good job -- $15.00 is good. $20 if it is like the best. For eyebrow waxing, just two dollars or three if it is really good.
Tipping Hair Stylist?
Just like at a restaurant, you should tip 15-20% at least. This is especially true if you are going back to the same person repeatedly.
Tipping Hair Stylist?
Around 20% is good. Especially if you want to go back to the same person.

I personally do not think they need a tip The Price of a Hair cut is high enough. $10.00 and it take a few minutes If you have deep pockets, and use their services, the tip should be 20% of the charges. Feel free to go higher, and give them another $100 that is fine with me, and the Hair stylist will appreciate it as well.
Tipping Hair Stylist?
A HAIR STYLIST HAS A DIFFICULT CAREER, I ALWAYS TIP MY HAIR STYLIST IF SHE GOES THE EXTRA MILE TO SHAMPOO AND APPLY GEL TO MY HAIR AND RECOMMEND HEALTHY HAIR PRODUCTS FOR MY HAIR, I USUALLY TIP MY HAIR STYLIST $2 TO $5 DOLLARS, ON AVERAGE A HAIR STYLIST CUTS HAIR ON 10 20 HEAD PER SHIFT, SO WHAT YOU GIVE IS NOT SO CHEAP, BECAUSE IT ALL ADDS UP ON A DAILY, WEEKLY MONTHLY BASIS, A GREAT HAIR STYLIST NEVER COMPLAINS AND ALWAYS GOES THE EXTRA MILE TO SATISFY IT'S CLIENTS.

When tipping a hairstylist, I always go by how long it took and how well I like it afterwards. For $100 job (if you feel like they did a good job), I would tip $20.00 if they were in a salon. If they were in business by themselves - $10.00. The salon always gets a big cut out of the stylists pay so thats why the difference. For the eyebrow waxing, I prob wouldnt tip.
Tipping Hair Stylist?
Only when I get waxed, its such a messy job.
Tipping Hair Stylist?
$15 for waxing plus between $1 to $2 additional dollars.
Tipping Hair Stylist?
It depends on how satisfied you are with the job done.
Tipping Hair Stylist?
You should tip the stylist 15-20%. I look at it this way...if you are generous with tipping, then you'll be remembered and serviced accordingly. For example, your hairstylist will get you in at the last minute or use new products on your hair. Mind you, this is only if you think the stylist did a good job and deserves the tip. I always tip delivery drivers, valet, bellhops, hairstylists, etc.
Tipping Hair Stylist?
I usually tip on a percentage basis when I go to the hair salon. Usually ten to fifteen percent . If there is a person that shampoos my hair, I give her a couple of bucks and give the rest to the main stylist.
