And how much are you usually supposed to tip? I've always wondered this because I go to a salon and have always tipped the beauticians a few dollars, but don't remember ever tipping at a Cost Cutters or a Great Clips.

Yes you should tip them .... Here is some information I found for you that might be helpful on how much and stuff ....
How Much Should You Tip?
What customers do: In Aveda's informal poll, the lowest tip was 10 percent and the highest was 25 percent, but most women said they stick to 20. In and around big cities, the percentage was more generous, even though the services cost more. Women with supershort hair, which they get cut and colored every four to six weeks, don't always give a huge tip because their annual beauty bill is so high to begin with. Stylists in some small-town beauty shops, however, report 15 percent as the norm. Those who work in mall or drop-in hair salons, and are less likely to have a loyal clientele, sometimes get tips of even less.
What salon staff wants you to do: Start from 20 percent to be fair. Young mothers up the ante if their preschoolers are in on the haircut. If you arrive late or have a toddler with you, you should increase your tip. Other reasons to tip more: if the salon squeezes you in at the last moment, your styling includes a shoulder massage, or your manicure includes a hand massage. The bottom line: If you like your hairstylist, tip at least 20 percent. It helps build relations with the salon and is especially helpful in procuring a last-minute appointment.

I always tip my hair stylist no matter where I go. It lets them know that they did a good job. You don't have to tip much. I usually tip about $5 if they did it the way I wanted them to.

I tip if they did a good job and listened to what I was asking for, also if I plan to return to the same person. I will not go to great clips or anything similar, you get what you pay for. If the cut is good I will give a tip of up to five dollars. I am picky about who cuts my hair and usually only let one person do it, find someone and stay with them, you get to know each other, you become comfortable talking to them and they always know what you want.

I always tip. The only time you shouldn't tip is when the owner of the salon cuts your hair.
It's usually between 15 and 20% for a tip.
Are you always supposed to leave tips for hair stylists who cut your hair?
Yes, it depends on how much your cut was. I normally leave $10.00 for a $40.00 haircut if I like my hair, if I don't like my hair I leave less.

Okay, some of these people are very rude. Like with dining, your tip should be 15-20%. The ONLY way a $5 tip would be acceptable is if the haircut cost $28.00 or less or the stylist was rude, gave a subpar cut, did not listen to what you wanted, or was extremely late/ or rushed through your appointment. Not tipping a stylist is not at all acceptable. If the cut/ service was so bad that it was undeserving of a tip then you should let the manager/ owner of the salon know. Not only will that let everyone understand why you are not tipping, but you are likely to get either a free cut or the money back for the cut you got. I love my stylist and would follow him anywhere. He cuts my very thick, very curly hair magnificently and then takes about 1 hour blow drying it straight. I tip him over 20% and also tip the person washing my hair if it is someone other then him. Because of this and my generelly gregarious attitude, my salon/ stylist will schedule me last minute, stay late to fit me in and generally treat me great every time I go in there. If someone who is not my stylist is washing my hair I have also noticed that I get a bit of extra attention (long head/ neck massage, free deep conditionings, etc). All of this makes my experience something I can look forward to regularly. being a jerk towards people providing you with a service is never a good idea. It speaks badly of your character as a person and is also just bad business. You never know when you may need a favor from someone or run into them down the line. The person who said "**** them" should be ashamed of themselves.
